Professor Mathur is a world-renowned researcher. Recently, he received an award from the Journal of Financial Research as co-author of the publication's 2006 Outstanding Article. Mathur along with Kimberly C. Gleason of Florida Atlantic University and Roy A. Wiggins, III of Bentley College, won for their article "The Use of Acquisitions and Joint Ventures by U.S. Banks Expanding Abroad."

The Winter 2006 issue included Mathur's co-authored article, now named the best work published during the entire year. The article examines international bank expansions as they occur in developed or developing markets. The first place award provided a $750 cash prize.

It was also announced that Mathur, a College of Business faculty member since 1977, will be managing editor of the Journal of Banking and Finance, a highly respected world economic and financial research publication, beginning Jan. 1, 2008.

Mathur’s research focuses on the areas of banking, corporate finance and international finance. His interests include stochastic processes, equilibrium modeling, times series modeling, and corporate control.

In 1995, 1998 and 2006 Mathur was named Researcher of the Year in the College of Business, where he has served as interim dean, chair of the Department of Finance and director of doctoral programs. “I love the people here,” said Mathur. “The students are good, the administration is progressive, the colleagues are collegial, the campus is beautiful, and the region has a lot to offer.”

During 2001-2002, Mathur was visiting professor of finance at the nationally ranked Olin School of Business at St. Louis’ Washington University. Mathur was a Fulbright professor of international business at Turku School of Economics in Finland in 1983 and a decade later was Fulbright professor of international finance at Portuguese Catholic University in Portugal.

Mathur started a publishing company that became global in its reach before selling its assets to a Dutch multinational corporation. He is the author or co-author of over 100 articles and 14 books. He serves on the editorial boards of a number of journals and is the executive editor of Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money, and of Journal of Multinational Financial Management, both published by Elsevier Science.

Mathur earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan University and his doctoral degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Born in the steel mill town of Jamshedpur, India, Mathur moved to Pakistan in 1947 and came to the U.S. in 1961. He has traveled all over the world and has lived in Finland and Portugal, but the travel bug still plagues him. “Two things on my list that I still have to do are to experience "El Encierro," or run with the bulls in Pamplona, and to go on a safari and have my picture taken by the sign that reads, ‘Congratulations. You are now at Uhuru Peak, Tanzania,’ aka Mount Kilimanjaro,” he said.
